In the past we have seen huge Japanese influences in the Western world. For such a small island, the influence in technology has been very distinct, from appliances to cars, even Western musical instruments. I am no historian, but you can read more on how Japan's influence on design has influenced the world. There seems to be a theme to all the success, and that is functionality and attention to detail. This is a perfect recipe for excellent interior design, and I believe the Japanese influences in interiors is here to stay, just like Kenwood, Toyota and Yamaha. Japanese-style interiors are definitely on the up at the moment with the popularity of the minimal look being at its' peak. Whilst minimalist interiors can be extremely beautiful, some can be lacking in character and interest. As the minimalist movement celebrates simplicity and emptiness, Japanese interiors allow interesting items, textures and patterns into this empty space to create a focus. I feel that there is a choice between inherently referencing Japanese items, or using the Japanese way of thinking to define spaces. As a trend, I would say the former is less lasting, whereas utilising the ideology is something that will stand the test of time. Of course, there is a balance that can be drawn. For example, this fantastic wallpaper mural uses the classic 'Great Wave' print, but with modern neutral colours and stunning fine detail. You can see more Japanese murals from that collection here. This collection in particular I have found to be a great help when designing spaces that have a hint of a Japanese style rather than leaning into it fully. I find they are a great way of referencing whilst making the room versatile and timeless.
There are many ways you can take influence from Japanese interiors, and utilise the way of thinking to create incredible spaces. I found a useful guide on on how to create your own Japanese-inspired interior.
